Glossary

 

 

 

 Adjustment


 A record in the Adjustment List, which allows many Item costs to be increased by a percentage by changing a single value. Can be used to apply inflation rates, area modifiers, etc.

 

Assembly


 A group of related Items, which can be selected together and customized for bidding.

 

Super Assembly


 A group of related Assemblies (which are group of related Items) which can be customized and used for quickly selecting Items to be used in a Bid.

 

Bid


 An estimating job -- also called an estimate or a quote. Contains Bid Items, Markups and Questions and Answers.

 

Bid Item List


The list of Items in the bid which are bid-specific and contain quantities and costs.

 

Bid Item Quantity


 A value or number needed for an Item which is usually in EA, SF, LF (square or linear feet).

 

Bid Item Unit


 The unit of measure (linear feet, each, etc.) which is used to guide the answering of the quantity value.

 

Bill of Materials


 A list of materials to build the job which also includes labor and subcontracts.

 

CAD


 Abbreviation for Computer-Aided Design. A program which assists in creating the design of a project.

 

Cost Table


 An optional, central repository for costs which can be shared by multiple Items.

 

Cost Types


 Material, labor, and subcontractor, etc., are the kinds of Classes or classifications you may attached to an Item. Costs will be accumulated in these classifications.

 

Cursor


 A movable marker on the computer screen indicating where to enter data, appearing as a I-beam bar.

 

Cursor Keys


 Computer keyboard keys that move the cursor around the screen and from field to field. These include arrow keys, Tab and Shift+Tab, Home, End, Page Up (or PgUp), and Page Down (or PgDn).

 

Digitizer


 A piece of hardware that uses a pen or a "puck" to measurement from blueprints.

 

Field


 An area of a list containing an individual Item of data such as a name. Several related "fields" makeup the record or line in the list.

 

Form


 Information can be "spread out" horizontally in a list or condensed in a Form using the Form F9 function key.

 

Function keys


 The keys on the left or top edge of the keyboard, usually labeled "F1," "F2," etc.

 

Hypertext


 A method where you can jump off to other related help messages and "back-up" to the original message.

 

Item


 An Item is something which you use in a Price Book or a Bid which has one or more costs associated with it.

 

List


 A list of lines or records which are related in the same table.

 

List Key


 The list key F7 will display a checklist of choices when on a Code or description field.

 

Markup


 Tax, overhead, profit, etc. will increase a bid's cost and change it from a cost to a "price". Markup values may be either percentages or lump sums. Markups can either be compounded or simply added and can be applied either at Item-level or at Bid-level.

 

Menus


 An on-screen list of tasks or choices that you may select different actions. You may use a mouse to select the action, or press a shortcut key, or press the underline key on the menu.

 

Price Book


 A list of Items with prices and other related information for a given industry, such as plumbing or printing. Price Books consist of Items, grouped by Division, and Subdivision; Cost Types; Budgets; Markups; Assemblies; Crews; etc. You may not have all of these tables available in your Price Book.

 

Questions


 Each bid can contain its own answers to questions or calculator memories. These answers then can be applied to all Bid Items which use have these question codes stored in their record.

 

Raw Base Cost


 The simplest, most basic level of cost entered in each Cost Column of an Item.

 

Summary List


 Item costs are placed in specific "buckets" to accumulate costs, e.g., Divisions, Costs types, etc.

 

Tagging


 Each list has a Tag column usually located on the left side with a tag mark (>) for a heading. Tagging lines allow great flexibility in selecting, costing, and deleting tagged lines.

 

Unit Accumulation


 An optional feature which allows you to easily see the total labor, equipment, or subcontractor hours (or days, etc.); or the Total Quantity for a particular material (e.g., all doors) across different Items in a Bid.

 

Unit Raw Cost/Cost/Price


 A Unit Raw Cost, Unit Cost or Unit Price is the Raw Cost, Cost or Price of an Item divided by its Bid Quantity. For instance, if 10 LF of wall costs $100 to put up, the Unit Cost of the wall is $10/LF.

 

Work Package


 The most powerful grouping of Items for bidding, a Work Package is a group of possibly-customized Items which can include whole Assemblies and Super Assemblies, much like a super-Super Assembly. Bids are used to implement Work Packages in EasyEst Estimating. When a Work Package is selected, Bid Quantities, Bid-specific costs and other specialization’s made to Bid Items will be retained.
