How to Build a Super Assembly

Super Assemblies are groupings of related Assemblies for quick selection of Items to be bid.

This following exercise applies to both Power and Checklist Groups. You should become very familiar with using and building Assemblies and try using some sample Super Assemblies before attempting to build a new Super Assembly.

Getting into the Super Assembly Builder:

The Super Assembly Builder is a special mode of the Item Selection window. Like most windows of the system, there are many ways to get into the Super Assembly Builder:

* Choose "Super Assembly Builder" from the Price Book menu.

* In the Item Selection window, press the "Build" menu button choose "Build Super Assembly" from the popup menu.

* From the Super Assembly List, press List (F7) or Details (F9), or choose "Build Super Assembly" from the F1 menu.

Choosing an Super Assembly:

The first thing you need to do to build (create or change) an Super Assembly is to decide which Super Assembly you will be working on. If you know the Super Assembly Code for the Super Assembly, you can just type it into the field to the right of the words "Build Super Assembly:" on the "Item Selection: Super Assembly Builder" window. The Super Assembly will be displayed in the window.

If you don’t know the number for the Super Assembly, the Super Assembly Builder has a list of Super Assemblies in the upper-right hand corner. Just click on one of the Super Assemblies.

Creating a New Super Assembly:

To create a new Super Assembly, just type in a new Code in the "Build Super Assembly:" Code field in the Super Assembly Builder. (You can press the "Add New Asm." button before that, if you like, but it isn’t necessary.) You will be asked to confirm that you really do want to create a new Super Assembly (as opposed to just entering the wrong Code!).

If there was an Super Assembly already in the Super Assembly Builder (which there won’t be if you pressed "Add New Asm."), you will be given the chance to start this new Super Assembly with a copy of the previous Super Assembly. This can be a real time-saver for creating similar Super Assemblies. If you would rather start fresh, answer "No" to the question and Super Assembly Builder will give you a blank Super Assembly: no Description, no Assemblies.

After you have created the Super Assembly, be sure to type in a Description (in the field to the right of the Super Assembly list button at the top of the Super Assembly Builder screen). You may use up to 30 characters.

You may also create Super Assemblies on the Super Assembly List just like any other list -- by typing into the Add New line, or using Insert or Copy Record. Of course, you’ll have to go to the Super Assembly Builder to change which Assemblies are assigned to the Super Assembly.

Building in the Super Assembly List allows you to control where the new Super Assembly appears in the list, while the Super Assembly Builder always sticks new Super Assemblies at the end of the list. (You can of course rearrange or sort the list later.) Where you create Super Assemblies is up to you.

Adding or Removing Assemblies from an Super Assembly:

The Assemblies which are assigned to your current Super Assembly are shown in the list in the top center of the Super Assembly Builder window.

If you want to add a Assembly to that list, click on a Assembly in the list of Available Assemblies (in the upper-right-hand corner of the window), and press the "Copy this Assembly" button.

To remove a Assembly from an Super Assembly, click on the Assembly in the middle list ("Assemblies in this Super Assembly") and press the "Don’t Include" button. This only removes the Assembly from the Super Assembly, it does not delete the Assembly from the Price Book or remove it from any other Super Assemblies.

For your convenience, when you pick a Assembly in either the "Available Assemblies" or "Assemblies in this Super Assembly" list, the Items assigned to that Assembly are displayed in the list at the bottom of the window ("Items in this Assembly"). This can be helpful in identifying your Assemblies and making sure they are built correctly for use in this Super Assembly. If you make a change to a Assembly or Item, the Build menu button at the bottom of the window provides quick access to the Item Form (to build Items) and the Assembly Builder.

Selecting default Tagged Assemblies in the Super Assembly

Super Assemblies often contain more Assemblies than are used at one time. Some Assemblies are used most of the time, while others are rarely used, but should be available for convenience.

To make selection of Assemblies and Items by Super Assembly even faster, you may pre-tag the Assemblies you would usually tag to be used at selection time. Of course, you can always customize your choices at Super Assembly selection time.

To tag a Assembly in advance (or by "default"), select the Assembly in the "Super Assembly list of Assemblies" box and press the "Tag Assembly" button underneath the list box.

If the Assembly is already tagged, the button will change to "Untag Assembly" and can be used to remove the default tag on the Assembly.

The Assembly Tags, like the Super Assembly List itself, is saved with the Super Assembly. The Assemblies and their Items are parts of the Price Book. This means that you only need to change a Assembly or Item one place - not in each Super Assembly.

CAUTION: Be sure to check your Super Assembly for errors and omissions.

Test Your Work

Play with this Super Assembly by using it to see if all Assemblies are correct. To do this, choose "Select Super Assembly" from the Select button’s popup menu. If you need to make changes, you can easily get back to the Super Assembly Builder by choosing "Build Super Assembly" from the Build button’s popup menu.
